Teratos

Fast link.

Questions:

You see one of these specimens in an empty room. Is it art or science?, and why?

Arte they beautiful images, or grotesque?, and why?

I don't know how many readers does this open notebook has, but i'd like to see some comments. My answers to this questions will come in a future post.

/Link rápido.

Preguntas:

Soffione

This is another one of the gifts I made in the "La Colmena" workshop, at the National School of Plastic Arts (México). It is a gift for an unknown person, with various species gathered from the sidewalks of many places in Mexico. The dandelion, and the moss, contain in their shapes and in their relationships with their environment, as much beauty as the most refined orchid, and for me, looking at them in this city replaces looking at the starry sky that has been stolen from me by the lights of the earth.

Stranger: I give you a universe. If you have the time to take care of it and obvserve it, you will find great secrets. If you can't, then return it to the streets.

Micro ecosistemas cerrados

These are the first results of my investigations on art and ecology.

What I have in mind is the (maybe apparent) contradiction that living beings can only exist as systems that are relatively isolated from the environment (to the point that death comes when our bodies lose their individual homeostatic process), but at the same time we can not exist isolated form an ecosystem (from the greek oikos, meaning house), a system that supports us and connects us to organic and inorganic elements in clomplex ways which are probably also part of a larger homeostatic process.

We human beings seem to be unable to identiffy ourselves with both things at athe same time: to feel that you belong to a Whole seems to imply an ego lost (understanded as the counciousness of individuality). It is well known that thinking of the inmensity of the universe, and the smallness of our place in it, makes our personality and individual problems seem unimportant and even meaningless. Equally, when you are focused on your individual existence you become incapable of thinking about your rol in the "big system" of things.

Can both points of view be embraced with a singe gaze? I don't have an answer for that and even writing on the subject seems enormously difficult.

Back to the pictures, these works are scale models of an ecosystem. They are made with water, plants and animals from Xochimilco, and should be able to survive for various years. They are gifts for persons who will have to take care of them, regulating the amount of sunlight they receive and monitoring the births and deads and the effects that tey have on the balance of the ecosystem.

......
